The tagline “It may be a question of blood flow” may soon apply to a certain form of dementia as well as to erectile dysfunction. Funding amounting to nearly $500,000 was announced by the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and the Alzheimer’s Society UK for a study to investigate the efficacy of a popular ED medication (tadalafil) in the treatment of vascular dementia. Vascular dementia is the second leading form of dementia behind Alzheimer’s.
The study makes sense when viewed in the light of blood flow restriction in VD. This form of dementia is often present in stroke victims when blood flow is suddenly cut off from a portion of the brain. The study will be conducted at St. George’s University of London and will investigate whether tadalafil can help prevent VD by increasing blood flow within the brain. Vascular dementia is often present along with Alzheimer’s disease in the condition known as “mixed dementia.”
